Job Description
Purpose of the Role
To own the company’s internal application end-to-end — its architecture, its integration with the existing ERP and planning systems, its day-to-day reliability, and its continuous improvement — and to develop a small in-house team capable of sustaining it.
Key Responsibilities
OWNERSHIP OF THE PLATFORM
- Own the shared data model (client, style, order, size, BOM item, employee, user) and enforce its consistent use across every module.
- Maintain one application shell with unified login, role-based permissions and a single API layer; deliver new capability as feature areas within it rather than as separate applications.
- Own the repository, database, environments, deployment process, backups and access control.
- Monitor system health, resolve production issues, and maintain an acceptable uptime standard for daily factory use.
INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING SYSTEMS
- Own the import and export routines that exchange data with the two existing ERP and planning systems.
- Maintain validation, error reporting and reconciliation on every file exchange — duplicate detection, stale-record handling and a full audit trail.
- Ensure failed imports are visible and recoverable, never silent.
- Maintain documented field-level mapping between each external system and the internal data model, and update it whenever either side changes.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
- Run a standing intake process for requests from merchandising, PPC, production, quality and commercial teams; prioritise against business impact with the Director.
- Convert operational processes into written functional specifications before development begins.
- Release improvements on a predictable cadence, with release notes for users.
- Retire manual workarounds and duplicate data entry as the system matures.
WORKING WITH AI-ASSISTED BUSINESS USERS
- Work alongside managers who use AI platforms such as Claude to express their domain knowledge as specifications, process maps, wireframes, sample data, SQL queries and test cases; treat these as high-quality inputs and build from them rather than restarting the requirement from scratch.
- Define the boundary clearly: managers produce requirements, prototypes, test cases and analysis; the development team owns the production schema, the codebase and anything that writes to live data.
- Review, refactor and harden AI-generated code or queries before anything reaches production — checking data integrity, permissions, performance and edge cases.
- Set up safe sandbox and test environments with realistic anonymised data, so managers can prototype and test without risk to live operations.
- Establish a lightweight intake format so that AI-assisted specifications arrive in a consistent, reviewable structure.
- Run structured user acceptance testing with domain experts, and turn their findings into tracked, prioritised work.
TEAM LEADERSHIP
- Supervise junior developers: assign work, review all code before release, and enforce standards.
- Define coding standards, branching and testing practice.
- Train and mentor; build genuine redundancy, so that no single module has only one person who understands it.
DOCUMENTATION AND CONTINUITY
- Maintain technical, schema and user documentation as a standing deliverable.
- Maintain a tested restore procedure.
- Ensure any module could be picked up by another developer without a rewrite.
Required Skills and Experience
Essential
- 5 or more years building business applications end-to-end, including at least one internal system in live daily use by non-technical staff.
- Strong full-stack development in a mainstream production stack (Laravel/PHP, .NET, Node.js or Python/Django) with a modern front end.
- Solid relational database design in PostgreSQL or MySQL — normalisation, indexing, transactions, migrations.
- Practical experience with file-based system integration: parsing and generating CSV and Excel at scale, handling malformed data, building reconciliation logic.
- API design, authentication and role-based access control.
- Git, deployment, server administration and backup management.
- Ability to gather requirements directly from operational staff and produce clear written specifications.
- Fluent, critical use of AI coding assistants — able to accelerate delivery with them while independently verifying correctness, and able to review and harden AI-generated code submitted by others.
- Comfortable collaborating with non-technical colleagues who arrive with AI-generated specifications, prototypes or queries: receptive to the input, and able to explain clearly and without condescension why something needs reworking before it can go live.
Desirable
- Apparel, textile or discrete manufacturing experience; familiarity with BOM, WIP, line loading, cut-to-ship reconciliation or sampling workflows.
- Experience integrating with or extending commercial ERP systems.
- Reporting and business intelligence tooling.
- Experience supervising junior developers.
Attributes
- Willing to spend time on the production floor and in merchandising, not only at a desk.
- Disciplined about specification and documentation; resistant to building from verbal instruction alone.
- Pragmatic about scope — able to say what should be bought rather than built.
- Working proficiency in Urdu for floor-level requirement gathering.
Performance Measures
- System uptime and verified backup success.
- Import failure and data-mismatch rate against the existing systems.
- Daily active use by each intended department.
- Delivery of prioritised improvements against agreed timelines.
- Reduction in manual status-chasing and duplicate data entry across merchandising and PPC.
- Turnaround time from a manager-submitted specification to a testable build.
- Defect rate on features built from AI-assisted specifications, as a measure of how well the intake and review process works.
- Documentation completeness and demonstrated bus-factor above one.
- Development and retention of junior team members.
